Isaac Levy was born in Turkey in 1919 was a leading figure in the world of research and preservation of the Judeo – Spanish culture.
Its language, Ladino was a form of 15th-century Spanish later embellished with Hebrew and other languages as the Jews of Spain spread out to other Mediterranean countries.
Isaac worked as both a composer and cantor. After the creation of the State of Israel, he was appointed head of the Ladino department at Israel’s national radio station (“Kol Israel”). His life’s work was devoted to the collection and preservation of the songs of Sephardic Jews: these songs had been passed down orally from generation to generation over a period in excess of 500 years.
During his lifetime he published:
4 books containing Sephardic romances and Spanish Jewish folk songs he collected.
10 volumes of liturgical songs
These 10 volumes included Liturgical and Sacred Songs in versions of all the Jewish Spanish communities’ Diaspora.
Isaac Levy collected the material for these books among others from the Ladino-speaking elderly people he met in Jerusalem, city of residence, from his mother, and other elderly people being introduced to them specifically for this purpose. Some even came to him to their own initiative. He recorded them and tried to document the melodies by musical notes and write the Lyrics in Ladino & French.
